Towards the end of Stardust Crusaders and in all subsequent story arcs, Stand names are references to musicians, bands, albums, and songs from American, Australian, British, and European music scenes only one Stand's name has ever referenced Japanese music. When Stands were first introduced in Stardust Crusaders, they were named after the cards of the Major Arcana of the Tarot W, and sometimes a color (the color of the Stands body), and then Ancient Egyptian deities W, with their designs often featuring motifs of those cards or mythological figures. Some can be incredibly powerful due to their User's outstanding grit, others can be highly situational because of a defining quirk of character, or even detrimental to their User if they do not have the necessary fighting spirit. As an embodiment of someone's psyche, Stands are therefore as varied as human minds can be.ĭue to their diversity, Stands are not made equal. They follow a loose set of rules, with no definite standard by which one can fully classify them. Beyond that definition, Stands present themselves in a large variety of forms and with different behaviors, if they are sentient at all. However, Stands may also derive through the exploration of possibilities and expression of the mind, in which case, only a large amount of mental strength is required. The only power that's truly impossible for a Stand is bringing the dead back to life.Ī Stand can also represent the manifestation of an individual's innate "fighting spirit" and embodies, to an extent, the individual's psyche. Stands can come in many different shapes and sizes, they also have many different abilities (Such as, Stop Time, Erase Time, Control the Weather, etc). According to Joseph Joestar, the name "Stand" comes from the fact they usually manifest standing next to the User: ready to act. When first presented, the term is written as "Stand" ( 幽波紋 ( スタンド ), Sutando), with furigana W to change the pronunciation of what literally means "Ghostly Ripple" ( 幽波紋, Yūhamon) in kanji W. The Stand followed them into the bottle, and thus, is trapped.Stands are defined as personifications of "life energy" (although it's later changed to "spiritual energy") whose abilities are given visual form. His plan worked, and the bottle remained the same size because the baby wanted it. Anasui explains that he rolled a bottle toward the baby, expecting it to be curious and pick it up. Jolyne's fingers start to split open and bleed, but Anasui reassures her by saying that they can capture the Stand now, since it has shrunk to a more manageable size. As Jolyne and Anasui desperately climb away, the Stand learns to throw the rocks even higher so that they tumble down like boulders. Jolyne realizes that the child is capable of strategy, as it recognizes that objects get bigger the farther away they are. The baby moves over to the shoe and sniffs it its Stand picks up a rock and throws it at Jolyne and Anasui. Anasui demands that Jolyne climbs with him and that the Green Baby is an enemy. Jolyne's shoe flies off her foot and out of the baby's range, causing it to grow bigger and make a sound, which the baby turns towards curiously. Suddenly, Anasui appears and uses Diver Down to save Jolyne. She screams in pain and begins to shrivel up. Jolyne summons Stone Free and tries to attack, but the Stand grabs her leg and crushes it. The Stand grows bigger as she keeps falling. Jolyne wraps string around the Stand, recognizing that if she captures the it, she also captures the baby.

Jolyne realizes that she's going to fall forever, and that it's caused by the Green Baby's Stand.
